What To Check Before Adding a Stock
- A real catalyst. Earnings, news or a filing explains the move. Without one, a spike can fade fast.
- Relative volume. Trading well above its usual volume confirms real interest. Fidelity’s Volume Movers filter uses 100% above the 1-month average.
- Liquidity and spread. Wide bid-ask spreads, common pre-market, raise your cost to get in and out.
- When the list updates. Some movers lists are live; others, like Robinhood’s cards, update only after the close.
- Your own rules. A stock that’s moving isn’t automatically a trade. Check it fits your strategy and risk limits.
- An exit plan. Decide the price that proves you wrong before you enter.
